240V, 220V, Same Thing. The Details Are What Matter
People say 220V, 230V and 240V for the same thing: the higher-voltage circuit big appliances use. What actually matters is the amperage, the wire size and the outlet type. A dryer usually needs a 30 amp circuit, a range a 40 or 50 amp circuit, and a plug-in EV charger often uses a 50 amp NEMA 14-50 outlet.
Older homes often have 3-prong 240V outlets. Current code requires 4-wire circuits for new dryer and range installations, with a separate ground. If you’re replacing an appliance, it’s a good time to bring the circuit up to date.
Relocating an outlet is a new run. Moving a dryer or range across the room during a remodel usually means running new wire from the panel rather than extending the old circuit.
