Treat a burning or hot-plastic smell from an outlet, switch or panel as an emergency.
Unplug anything plugged into it if it’s safe to touch,
turn off the breaker for that circuit, and
don’t use the outlet. If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 911. Then call an electrician. Want help? See our

What Causes It
Almost always heat at a connection: a loose wire, a worn outlet that no longer grips plugs tightly, an overloaded circuit, or a damaged cord or plug. Older outlets in LA homes are common culprits.

Signs to Look For
Brown or black marks around the outlet, a warm faceplate, plugs that fall out easily, crackling or buzzing, and lights flickering on the same circuit.
What We’ll Do
Make it safe, open the outlet and the circuit, find the overheated connection, and replace the damaged outlet and wiring. You get the price before any repair beyond making it safe.
