Your Panel Decides the Charger, Not the Other Way Around
A Level 2 charger usually needs a dedicated 240V circuit. On a 200 amp service that’s rarely a problem. On the 100 amp services common in older Northeast LA homes, it can be tight, especially with central AC or an electric dryer.
You don’t always need a new panel. A load calculation may show room for the circuit as is. If not, a load management device can share capacity with other big appliances and avoid a full service upgrade.
Plan for two cars. If a second EV is likely, it’s cheaper to size the wiring for it now than to run it again later.
Check for rebates. LADWP, Pasadena Water and Power, Glendale Water and Power and Southern California Edison have all offered EV charger programs at different times. Programs change, so check your utility’s current offer before you buy.
