A dead GFCI outlet has usually
tripped. Press
Reset firmly. If it won’t reset, check the breaker for that circuit first, because a GFCI needs power to reset. If the breaker is on and it still won’t reset, the GFCI is detecting a fault or has failed and should be checked or replaced. Want help? See our

Find the Right GFCI
One GFCI outlet often protects several regular outlets downstream. A dead outlet in a bathroom may be controlled by a GFCI in another bathroom, the garage, or outside. Check every GFCI in the kitchen, bathrooms, garage, laundry and exterior.
Why It Won’t Reset
No power: a tripped breaker means the GFCI can’t reset. A real fault: moisture in an outdoor outlet, or a faulty appliance plugged in downstream. Unplug everything on the circuit and try again. A worn-out GFCI: they wear out, often after 10 years or so.

Why It Keeps Tripping
Rain and sprinklers getting into outdoor outlets, appliances with failing motors or heating elements, and damaged cords are the usual causes. A GFCI that trips constantly is doing its job. Find the cause rather than bypassing it.
When to Call an Electrician
If it won’t reset with power on and nothing plugged in, if it trips repeatedly, or if the outlet is warm or discolored. We can test the circuit and replace the GFCI.
