Heat Pump Water Heater Electrical Requirements

The short answer

Most heat pump water heaters need a dedicated 240V circuit, commonly 30 amps. Some newer models are 120V plug-in units designed to replace gas water heaters without a new 240V circuit. Check the model’s nameplate, and your panel’s capacity, before you buy. Want help? See our heat pump and ac wiring service.

240V Models

The most common type. They need a dedicated 240V circuit sized to the nameplate, often 30 amps. If you’re replacing a gas water heater, there’s usually no circuit there yet.

120V Plug-in Models

Designed for gas-to-electric swaps. They plug into a dedicated 120V outlet and avoid a 240V run, but they can recover hot water more slowly.

Panel Capacity

On a 100 amp service with other electric loads, adding a 30 amp circuit may need a load calculation, a load management device or an upgrade.

Space and Placement

Heat pump water heaters pull heat from the surrounding air and need room to breathe. Your plumber or installer will confirm the location. We run the circuit to it.

Rebates

Local utilities have offered heat pump water heater programs at different times. Check your utility’s current offer.
