Most dead outlets have a simple cause. In order: check whether it’s a
switched outlet, look for a
tripped GFCI anywhere nearby, check the
breaker panel, and test with a different device. If none of those bring it back, a loose or burned connection is likely, and an electrician should open it up. Want help? See our

If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or an outlet or panel is hot: turn off the breaker if you can do it safely, unplug what you can, and call (323) 286-9800. If there’s fire or heavy smoke, get out and call 911.
1. Is It on a Wall Switch?
Many rooms have an outlet controlled by a light switch. Flip the switches in the room and try again.
2. Look for a Tripped GFCI
A GFCI in a bathroom, kitchen, garage or outside can control outlets in other rooms. Press Reset on every GFCI you can find.

3. Check the Breaker Panel
A tripped breaker sits in the middle or off position. Turn it fully off, then on. If it trips again right away, leave it off.
4. Test with Another Device
Make sure the lamp or charger works in a different outlet.
5. Several Outlets Dead in a Row
If a group of outlets stopped working together and the breaker and GFCIs are fine, a loose connection at one outlet can break power to the rest of the run. This is common with older “backstabbed” outlets, and needs an electrician.
