Find the breaker that sits in the
middle or off position, push it
fully to OFF, then
back to ON. Unplug things on that circuit first. If it trips again right away, or you smell burning,
leave it off and call an electrician. Want help? See our
breaker repair & replacement service.
Before You Start
Make sure your hands and the floor are dry. If the panel is hot, buzzing, smells like burning or shows scorch marks, don’t touch it. Call (323) 286-9800.
Step by Step
- Turn off or unplug lights and appliances on the dead circuit.
- Open the panel door and find the breaker that isn’t fully on. Tripped breakers usually rest in the middle.
- Push it firmly to OFF. You should feel a click.
- Push it back to ON.
- Turn things back on one at a time.

If It Won’t Stay On
A breaker that trips again immediately is protecting you from a short or ground fault. Leave it off. Resetting it over and over can overheat wiring.
If Nothing Tripped
Check for a tripped GFCI outlet in a bathroom, kitchen, garage or outside. If the whole house is out, check whether neighbors have power and contact your utility.
Fuse Box Instead of Breakers?
Replace a blown fuse only with the same amperage. Never install a bigger fuse. Fuse boxes are worth replacing with a modern panel.
